Chapter 2
The next day, the three companions were bustled into the cart that would take them on the first stretch of their long, dangerous journey. As they were about to leave, a young woman ran forward, dragging a boy about Marcillius's age. A man, about 45 years old, was running behind her. He explained that the boy was his son, and the girl, his daughter. He also explained that he was a baker, and the boy, who he said was named Landan, wasn't a very good baker. He neglected the bread in the oven, and to make it seem like he had made more dough, he had added a gigantic amount of yeast, and had managed to fill the two story house with it.
“Take him!!!!!!!!!!!” His sister said as she shooed him in.
By the time they went out of the gate, Landan and Areena had learned that they were going to find the Six Keys, the six items that kept the dark from taking over the land.
"There were six masters of the keys as well, six people that had been chosen from their birth to rule the keys. Unfortunately, the newest key holder had turned evil and had killed the others. He had attempted to take their keys and to become all powerful, but the other keys had masters that they knew would come some day. In his fury, he cast them to five points in the kingdom, and had forgotten them. Thus is the tale of the six keys.” said Killion, finishing his tale. As he said that, a brown haired head popped out from under a bench. A female voice said, “Have you got the jewels? Are the police gone?”
Killlion grabbed the person and pulled it out from under the seat.
It was a young woman, about Areena's own age of sixteen, with red-brown hair, a leather band around her head that sported a pin in the shape of a flower, that later was discovered as a lock pick. “I'm Melody, a thei.. a gardener.” she said unconvincingly.
“And I'm a baboon's brother.” Landan said sarcastically.
“You are ugly enough to be one.” retorted Melody. Marcillius, Areena, and Killion grabbed the two, who were fighting.
“Oi!” said Killion, “you two are like two tom cats, having a tussle! Melody, these are Marcillius, Areena, and Landan, and I am Killion. We are on a trip to find the five good keys of light, and now, as you have volunteered for the trip, I think our tool is complete. Now sit down before I use you and Landan here as a wheel and an ox!”
Melody slumped down between Areena and a wall and pouted. Areena whispered to Marcillious,
“He's almost as commanding and smooth talking as his dad!” Marcillious replied with a hand over his eyes,
“You have no idea how much they are alike.” Now Melody and Landan were making a harmony of complaints and “We're too young to die!” and “Help, Someone!”
Marcillious gave them both a herb and told them that if they ate it, they would be home within a hour. They both downed it, and were asleep within a second. Marcillious grinned. “A fast working knockout herb. Use especially on chatterboxes and whiners.” They all chuckled and drove on, enjoying the silence.
Do Melody and Areena become good friends since they're around the same age? Just curious... and the herb sounds a little scary! -Abigail
